Mikey is one of this weeks treasures and a treasure he is indeed! He is thin and bedraggled looking but his kind soul shines through bright and clear. He is a tall horse about 16.1 hands if memory serves, and a chestnut.
Mikey is very easy to work around and rides like a dream. He needs a whack start to canter but does do it. I think with a little work he will canter on cue easily. He has a nice stride at the trot and will go around on a loose rein. This horse has beginer mount potential. he gets the thumbs up from all of us!

It is fantastic that Mikey was adopted so quickly! This made my morning and put a big smile on my face, and I was so grumpy before.

Is it the light in the pic or is his mane have a silver tint? I remember when I was a kid, some of the trainers would spray the horses manes with silver hair spray to enhance the silver tone on a liver chestnut with a silver mane (Sultan's Love o' Lee comes to mind). It was kind of cool. I know you can't do that now days. I like this guy, I hope we hear more about him.

YES! Pat must be burning up the phone lines! We do need a little grey eye candy though, so I hope someone finds time to post photos.

Well, I guess by now ya'll might have figured out where Mikey was going. We were currently WITHOUT a Saddlebred Rescue lesson horse as Gonzo had been placed and one of my students bought Sebastian. We couldn't be without a SBR lesson horse, we need to be representing!

Anyway, I called Pat and Mikey had just come in from the sale and was the best possibility for a lesson horse. He was shipped down with Tonic and arrived here Wednesday 6/2 around midnight.

He is in need of alot of TLC and he is in the right place for that! He is very skinny and road-worn, but maintains a bright and happy attitude, very sweet and friendly, despite his condition. That just amazes me. He has pretty much just been eating since he got here. We were lucky that my farrier was here on Thursday and was able to trim his rear hooves, his right was a good 2 inches longer than his left which was giving him some difficulty walking. My customers gave him a bath and doctored all of his sores and scrapes and they have been doting over him the past few days. We have the best barn family! They have raised over $800 to help pay for his adoption/shipping and vet/med/farrier!!!

It is going to take some time to rehab this horse, but his personality makes it worth the effort. I was kind of down about his condition until I saw him trot! He has a huge swingy stride and My eyes lit up and I saw a great ASB hunter in him. He is tall 16.3 hands, but gentle as a puppy. I also love his coloring, dark chestnut with dappling and he does have the silver in his mane. In his initial pics from Pat his face reminded me of a beloved horse I showed as a youth, that is what made my decision on him easy.

Well, I will keep updating, I want to get some video of his trot!

Thank you for the update on Mikey. That first picture is too cute with the horse behind him going down to roll and the others looking at the camera from a distance. Beautiful place and keep the pictures and videos coming!

I like the hay bale picture. Could this, previously starving, horse be saying "I'm starting at this spot and I'm not stopping until I've eaten the whole thing!!!"

Mikey loves his hay!! He has really started to brighten up since he has gotten some food. He had a powerdose of safeguard dewormer when he got here and is on Fasttrack to help his digestive system. My customers have brought in jugs of corn oil for him and he will be going to the vet on Monday. My customers have really been pampering him, grooming him, taking him out to hand-graze, and have him decked out with a fly sheet and mask. Some halter tubes appeared on the new halter and leadrope someone brought in for him. He is in heaven!

He still has a long way to go, but I am happy to see him eating well and his sores are healing. He maintains his good attitude and I have been lunging him to maintain some stamina and help build his muscle. I will get some video posted of his trot. He still needs to gain about 200 lbs., and his legs are pretty rough, but everyone has really rallied around him and he has a great support team!

A quick update on Mikey, he is doing fabulously well. I really like him and we haven't even ridden him yet! We have been very busy with camps, shows, lessons, etc. but Mikey has gotten his share of attention too. He is really starting to come out of his shell, I think the treats have helped with that, and everyone loves him! He has been helping with the camps, I use him when we are talking about health, first aid, teeth, feet/legs, and tails. The campers have just loved hearing his story and hearing about Saddlebred Rescue, and have all become fans!

He has been great for talking about care and body conditioning, and also for legs. They have practised putting bandages on his legs and have all wanted to groom him and pamper him.

He just loves all of the attention and he is looking great! His coat is nice and shiny and his hooves are in really good shape. He has been eating well and has gained alot of weight. You can see how he is kind of bow-legged in the rear in this picture.

This week I've had some time to spend with him, so I've been long-lining him every day. He is doing so well, I just can't believe it. He is bending well and stretching down through contact and even cantering on both leads. I have long-lined him in all of the riding areas now and even over ground poles and a few small jumps. He is so tall he just steps over them. I can't believe how he is starting to fill out and I'm sure in another couple of months he will just be looking like a normal horse. Next week is another camp, so I'll probably not start riding him until the week after that. He is such a good boy, he's already becoming one of my favorites!

Just now catching up on reading all of Mikey's June posts. He sounds like he has gone to horse heaven. Keep up the good work and thanks for the great updates. Tell all of your barn angels that there a lot more like him that could use their fund raising support.

He looks like he will be a nice hunter type horse. Love his snip!
